Melbourne: Asian Cinema at the MQFF

The good people at the Melbourne Queer Film Festival have gotten in touch and let me know that they’ve got a few Asian films on this year’s program, amongst quite a large collection of films from all over the world. The festival starts this week, running from 14-24 March, and here’s what I can see on the program from Asia (with links to their synopses and ticketing info):
Two Weddings and a Funeral
2012, South Korea, directed by Kim Jho … (read more)
2012 International Chinese Film Festival
It’s certainly the season for festivals — another that almost slipped under our radar is the International Chinese Film Festival, which opens this weekend (15 September) in Sydney with their opening film Dangerous Liaisons and powers through their line-up of twenty-two (!!) feature films over the rest of the month at Event Cinemas on George Street.
On the 30th of September, they pack it all up and run the festival again in Melbourne, at the Cinema Nova in Carlton!… (read more)

MIFF 2012: Accent on Asia

There’s less than a week to go until the Melbourne International Film Festival opens (on the 2nd of August), and I’ve been lazy and not posted a roundup of the Asian cinema showing this year.
It’s not so bad, though: they’ve done the work for us and collected it all into their Accent on Asia programme — the official roundup is here.
Here are a few highlights: … (read more)
KOFFIA 2012 Lineup Released

The wait is over, and the hardworking folks at KOFFIA have released their festival lineup for this year. Twenty new feature films, three modern classics and a bunch of short films in three cities this time: Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
There’s a great rundown of what’s on offer on their site — of particular interest is the Aussie premiere of Korea’s box office winner for 2011, War of the Arrows, which opens the festival, and the pile of other … (read more)
‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ in Melbourne for MIFF 2012

Our stats since the Sydney Film Festival suggest that a few people have hit the site looking for release info on Indian epic Gangs of Wasseypur in Australia. I’ve done some digging myself, and it doesn’t look like there’s a real Aussie release confirmed, but I thought I’d share this litte update: the Melbourne International Film Festival’s direct from Cannes update states that they’ve programmed both Part 1 and Part 2 of Wasseypur for their festival in August.
So, if … (read more)

‘Shanghai Space’ and ‘Mumbai Disconnected’, free screenings in Melbourne
A quick update for Melbournians up for something interesting (and free!)
The good folks at MIFF are bringing a series of documentaries to the big screen in Federation Square on Thursday November 24, and the first two are films about Asian megacities that proved popular at MIFF 2010. We figured HC’s readership might be interested, so here’s the deal:
From 6:30pm to 8:30pm, they’re screening two of the Danish Cities on Speed documentaries. The first, Nanna Frank Møller’s Shanghai Space… (read more)

The Fantastic Asia Film Festival comes to Melbourne

Melbournians take heed! A new festival is coming to town, and it’s bringing with it four days of Asian film that run the gamut of cult and genre cinema: from their opener, Nishimura’s zombie splatter film Helldriver, to low-budget Filipino ghost/horror flicks Altar and Yanggaw. They’ve packed a huge number of films into the Cinema Nova in Carlton over four days, starting on the 10th of November.
You’ll find the complete lineup and session times at their website… (read more)
