If you think babies are adorable, then you might get something out of this film. If, like me, you don’t, then you might find this film as disappointing as I did.
Despite having a strong cast who try their best, this baby romance fails to follow up on the promise of La Brassiere. It would have been hard to make a sequel to that one, given that the nature of romantic comedies is to have all the appropriate cast paired off at the end, and the only way to make another film would be to break the pairings. Which this does, sort of. Which inevitably leads to an uncomfortable sense of impermanence.
And while the idea of stashing your baby into a self-contained capsule might appeal, as it apparently did to B. F. Skinner (the famous psychologist), the theme of “What babies want” didn’t grab me much. Babies want food, clean bottoms, and cuddles, as far as I can tell, and while they are probably necessary for the continuation of the species, they don’t have a place in romantic comedy. Unless it’s as a warning as to what might happen if you don’t use prophylaxis, and I suggest that the film-makers should have stuck on a mental condom to prevent this project from fruiting.
