Extremely last minute Drawn to Screen giveaway for Brisneylanders!
Update: The double passes have been claimed. Thanks for the quick responses! Our winners will be notified shortly.
The answer to our question was of course Moss, which was based on a popular webcomic that began in 2007.
Been chatting with the lovely people over at GoMA’s Australian Cinémathèque in Brisbane today, who have offered us a couple of double passes to one of the films remaining in their Drawn to Screen: Graphic Novels, Comics and Serials programme.
And … (read more)

Comics, Film and Anime at the Australian Cinémathèque, GoMA (QLD)
So, you know how I was saying there was going to be nothing to go see after the whole JFF, BIFF, GCFF Queensland film frenzy was over? Well, I was wrong, because from the 6th of January (that’s tomorrow, people!) the Australian Cinémathèque at the Gallery of Modern Art is starting a new programme – Drawn to Screen: Graphic Novels, Comics and Serials.
I’ll refrain from making too much fangirly noise but omg SO COOL. There’s going to be … (read more)

JFF, BIFF & GCFF: November movie madness in QLD
Bloody hell, the November cinema scene up here in Queensland has gone a little crazy!
First up early in the month, the Japan Film Festival is happening around the country, and sure, we don’t get a lot to choose from comparatively speaking, but what we do get is worth leaving the house for – Studio Ghibli’s Arrietty, based on The Borrowers; live action extravaganza Space Battleship Yamato (come on, it’s a battleship in space that shoots a laser … (read more)
JFF dates announced
Via Twitchfilm (man, those guys are on the ball) the Japan Foundation has announced dates for the annual awesome Japanese Film Festival here in Aus. And the big news this year is that the JFF is coming to Adelaide!
So, start blocking out time in early September people; there’s a great range of films on offer! More details at the festival website (as if you didn’t already know).
GoMA in Brisbane reopens
I’ve been F5ing my browser window religiously since late January in anticipation of GoMA – and by association, the resident Cinematheque – reopening after the floods. Before it all went a little to hell, the Cinematheque programme A New Tomorrow: Visions of the Future in Cinema was featuring some kick ass sci-fi not to be missed, including a decent selection of anime.
Well, I’m pleased to say the gallery has indeed reopened its doors finally, and they’ve gone to great … (read more)
Studio Ghibli comes to Brisbane’s Palace Centro
In case you Brisneylanders out there haven’t heard, mid-February to mid-March sees the Palace Centro down on James Street in New Farm screening Ghibli classics. If you’ve never seen some of Miyazaki’s best works – like Laputa Castle in the Sky or Princess Mononoke – on the big screen, now’s your chance! And even if you have, it’s no hardship to see them again, right? No, I didn’t think so.
More details at Madman.… (read more)

Samson’s GBW for 2008
The Good – Sparrow
It’s been a truly great year for Asian cinema! There are so many highlights, such as John Woo’s ambitious historical war epic Red Cliff, the little bit silly but hugely entertaining Hong Kong thriller Connected, and Cape No. 7, Taiwan’s box office hit that may possibly revive its struggling film industry in the same way Shiri did in Korea back in 1999. But my personal favourite Asian film of 2008 has to be Johnnie To’s gentle … (read more)

Supanova 09 – Brisbane report
I have to admit, I rocked up to my first ever Brisbane Supanova thinking it’d be somehow a little bit less than the Sydney version I went to last year. Not so. Definitely not so. And I’m not about to say anything that possibly everybody but me already knew – Brisbane Supanova is huge, and these days I think you’d be hard pressed to find the sci-fi and Western comics in amongst the anime and manga fans without deliberately … (read more)
