Like all nostalgic reminisces, fairytales no longer seem to be as good as they use to be. It seems the underlying message of the stories are either too unPC or trite to really appeal to our grown up sensibilities. And yet most of us still maintain a small emotional attachment to them. Add to that, the modern-day fairytale which is the Romantic Comedy and you are more than likely to draw an audience.

Anna in Kungfu Land (2003)

The opening sequence held so much promise. Cheesy animation evocative of Powerpuff Girls with all the various participants in their computer-generated alter egos in a five second animation that pretty told you all you really needed to know about the characters, aka their schticks. With the title Anna in Kungfu Land, there was the hope of a mindless but enjoyable farce of a live action cartoon.

Love Undercover 2: Love Mission (2003)

About 20 mins into this harebrained Canto comedy, Miriam Yeung shrugs her shoulders and says “I’m a goof!” Daniel Wu asks her to be serious; she looks at him firmly and says slowly, “I… am… a… goof…”.

That pretty much sums up why it is hard to take her or the film seriously; she’s just goofing around. The flick has its moments, mostly at the start, with a couple of nifty sequences which show how she was demoted after her … (read more)
