So, you know how I was saying there was going to be nothing to go see after the whole JFF, BIFF, GCFF Queensland film frenzy was over? Well, I was wrong, because from the 6th of January (that’s tomorrow, people!) the Australian Cinémathèque at the Gallery of Modern Art is starting a new programme – Drawn to Screen: Graphic Novels, Comics and Serials.
I’ll refrain from making too much fangirly noise but omg SO COOL. There’s going to be more caped crusaders than you can poke a stick at and as you can imagine, there’s also a some pretty decent representation from the manga/manhua-inspired corner as well.
On the live action front there’s Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance; Lady Snowblood (Kill Bill eat your heart out); Death Note; Old Boy; Ichi the Killer; Young and Dangerous and Storm Riders. Waving the flag for the animation revolution is Afro Samurai, Ghibli’s Whisper of the Heart and Porco Rosso, Akira, Osamu Tezuka’s Buddha: The Great Departure and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence.
There’s even a cosplay competition being held on Australia Day from 12 noon. You can register at the Cinémathèque programme page.
Needless to say, I’ve never been more happy to be wrong in my life, so if you’re like me and have been feeling the post film festival season blues (and even if you’re not), get yourself along to GoMA for even more awesome Asian cinema on the big screen!
