Fans of titanic Hong Kong directors Tsui Hark and John Woo, rejoice — the most recent film from each director hits both DVD and Blu-ray here in Australia this week!
Pinnacle are releasing Tsui Hark’s Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame, an action-magic-mystery-history thingummy as Alan quite accurately puts it, and a good deal of fun. We’ve already talked about it a fair bit here, so I won’t repeat myself — but if you’re a Tsui Hark or Andy Lau fan and you missed it when it was in cinemas, now’s the time to pick it up.
We also have Madman’s release of Reign of Assassins, where John Woo moves into wuxia territory, ground he’s not trod often before. It stars Michelle Yeoh as an assassin of considerable skills who wants to hang up her blades, leave the martial arts world and start a normal life… and as we all know, leaving the world of jianghu is never easy.
I haven’t personally seen Reign yet, but I’m looking forward to it — and we should have a review up on HC shortly!
